Key Phrases & Expressions

Saying What Hurts

avoir mal à + body part

J'ai mal au pied = My foot hurts

Tu as mal à la tête = You have a headache

Elle a mal aux dents = She has toothache

J'ai mal au cœur = I feel sick/nauseous

Remember the contractions!

  • à + le = au (J'ai mal au bras)
  • à + la = à la (J'ai mal à la gorge)
  • à + l' = à l' (J'ai mal à l'estomac)
  • à + les = aux (J'ai mal aux yeux)

Other Useful Verbs

  • aller bien = to be well
  • tousser = to cough
  • se couper = to cut oneself
  • avoir un coup de soleil = to get sunburned

Temperature

Il a 37° = He has a temperature of 37 degrees

Je suis malade. J'ai 38°, et j'ai mal à la tête = I'm sick. I have a temperature of 38 degrees and a headache

Emergency Phrase

Au secours! = Help!

Il a le bras cassé. Appelez une ambulance tout de suite.

= He has a broken arm. Call an ambulance straight away.

Build sentences by combining elements from each column:

Example sentences:

Practice Activities

📝 Exercise 1: Body Part Labels (10 mins)

Dual Coding Practice:

  1. Draw a simple stick figure on paper
  2. Label at least 10 body parts in French (include the gender: la tête, le bras, etc.)
  3. Cover your labels and test yourself - can you remember them all?
  4. Repeat tomorrow to strengthen your memory!

🗣️ Exercise 2: At the Doctor's Role Play (15 mins)

Retrieval Practice:

  1. Write out a conversation between a doctor and patient
  2. Patient: Describe at least 3 symptoms using "J'ai mal à..." and other expressions
  3. Doctor: Ask questions and suggest treatment
  4. Example start: "Bonjour docteur. Je suis malade. J'ai mal à la tête et j'ai 38°..."
  5. Practise reading it aloud - can you do it without looking?

🃏 Exercise 3: Flashcard Boxing (Leitner System)

Spaced Practice:

  1. Create flashcards for body parts and illnesses (French on one side, English + gender on the other)
  2. Make 3 boxes: Box 1 (every day), Box 2 (every 3 days), Box 3 (weekly)
  3. Start all cards in Box 1. If you get it right, move it to Box 2. Wrong? Back to Box 1.
  4. This way you focus more on words you find difficult!

✍️ Exercise 4: Translation Challenge (10 mins)

Active Recall: Translate these without looking at your notes first:

  1. "My stomach hurts since yesterday"
  2. "She has a broken arm"
  3. "I have toothache and I have a fever"
  4. "We need to call an ambulance immediately"
  5. "He has a cold and he's coughing a lot"

Check your answers, then try again tomorrow!

🎯 Exercise 5: Brain Dump (5 mins)

Before you look at this page:

  1. Set a timer for 5 minutes
  2. Write down EVERYTHING you can remember about health vocabulary
  3. Body parts, illnesses, symptoms, phrases - don't look at your notes!
  4. After 5 mins, check what you missed. That's what you need to study more!
