When to Use the Perfect Tense

How to Form the Perfect Tense

auxiliary verb (avoir or être) + past participle

With AVOIR (Most Verbs) Both Levels

Most verbs use avoir as the auxiliary verb:

J'ai joué = I played / I have played

Tu as regardé = You watched / You have watched

Il a mangé = He ate / He has eaten

Nous avons fini = We finished / We have finished

Vous avez vendu = You sold / You have sold

Ils ont choisi = They chose / They have chosen

Making Past Participles

Verb Type Rule Example
-ER verbs Remove -er, add jouer → joué
-IR verbs Remove -ir, add -i finir → fini
-RE verbs Remove -re, add -u vendre → vendu

Irregular Past Participles (Learn These!) Level 2

Some verbs use être instead of avoir. Remember them with MRS VAN DER TRAMP:

⚠️ Agreement with ÊTRE

When you use être, the past participle must agree with the subject:

  • Je suis allé (boy) / Je suis allée (girl)
  • Nous sommes allés (boys or mixed) / Nous sommes allées (girls only)

Add -e for feminine, -s for plural, -es for feminine plural

Negatives in the Perfect Tense

Put ne...pas around the auxiliary verb (avoir or être):

Je n'ai pas joué = I didn't play

Je ne suis pas allé = I didn't go

Nous n'avons pas fait = We didn't do/make

  • How do you form it?
  • Which verbs use avoir? Which use être?

2. Flashcard Boxing - Irregular Past Participles

Time: 15 minutes

  1. Make flashcards: Front = infinitive (faire), Back = past participle (fait)
  2. Three piles: "Don't Know", "Sort Of", "Nailed It"
  3. Test yourself - get it right? Move up. Wrong? Back to pile 1
  4. Focus on the "Don't Know" pile until it's empty

Time: 5 minutes

After studying this page, write:

  • 3 key facts about the perfect tense
  • 2 connections to other topics (e.g., "avoir in present tense", "agreement with être")
  • 1 question you still have

4. Sentence Builder Challenge

Time: 10 minutes

Write 10 sentences in the perfect tense from memory. Include:

  • 5 with avoir (include at least 2 irregular past participles)
  • 5 with être (MRS VAN DER TRAMP verbs)
  • Make sure some are negative!

Then check your grammar carefully.

5. Sketch It - MRS VAN DER TRAMP

Create a visual memory aid for MRS VAN DER TRAMP. Draw a simple picture or diagram that helps you remember which verbs use être. Stick figures are fine!

Don't just practice perfect tense by itself! Mix it with present tense practice so you learn WHEN to use each one:

  • Write 5 sentences in present tense
  • Write 5 sentences in perfect tense
  • Translate mixed sentences from English to French

This mixing makes your brain work harder, which creates stronger memories!
