How to Form the Perfect Tense
auxiliary verb (avoir or être) + past participle
With AVOIR (Most Verbs) Both Levels
Most verbs use avoir as the auxiliary verb:
J'ai joué = I played / I have played
Tu as regardé = You watched / You have watched
Il a mangé = He ate / He has eaten
Nous avons fini = We finished / We have finished
Vous avez vendu = You sold / You have sold
Ils ont choisi = They chose / They have chosen
Making Past Participles
| Verb Type | Rule | Example |
|---|---|---|
| -ER verbs | Remove -er, add -é | jouer → joué |
| -IR verbs | Remove -ir, add -i | finir → fini |
